Losing a derby always stings. But for Milan, Sunday's 1-0 loss was a huge sign of improvement.
After a pair of disjointed performances to start the season, the Milan on display at the San Siro were worlds apart from the ones that flopped against Fiorentina and struggled against Empoli.
The biggest difference was in midfield. The unit was the team's most glaring weakness over the first two rounds, but Sinisa Mihajlovic shook things up for the derby and it paid off.
Riccardo Montolivo played his first match of the season, and while he wasn't spectacular he certainly played like a man fighting for his job. He's the only player on the team with the skill set to truly play theregista position, and the improvement over Nigel de Jong—more of a destroyer than a passer—was palpable.
But the midfield's biggest revelation was Juraj Kucka. Some fans groaned when yet another Genoa player made his way on to Milan's books at the end of the transfer window, but the Slovakian has surprised critics with a few impressive dribbles and some good ball-winning ability.
With an improved midfield, Milan held a slight edge in possession on the night and created some dangerous early chances by slipping through balls in for Luiz Adriano and Carlos Bacca to chase. Had the former of the two been more clinical, the Rossoneri could have been two or even three goals to the good before half-time.
Instead, an excellent goal by Fredy Guarin put Inter up 1-0, and the goalpost and a couple of fantastic saves from Samir Handanovic kept it that way.
Still, the improvement was very promising. Mihajlovic was obviously impressed, telling Sky Sport Italia (h/t Football Italia) after the match that he had "found my team again."
On the other side, Palermo have started the season with some good results. They won both of their first two games 1-0. Against Serie A newcomers Carpi last week, they blew a 1-0 lead but recovered late on to salvage a 2-2 draw.
Despite being one of six teams tied on seven points behind league leaders Inter's nine, Palermo are still struggling to replace the void left by Paulo Dybala's departure to Juventus.
This early string of results is encouraging and will certainly help later in the season when survival is determined, but their current run is unlikely to be sustained.

Aside from Kucka, the biggest surprise Milan had in the derby was Mario Balotelli.
The Italy international made his second debut for the club just after the hour mark, replacing an ineffective Bacca. With his first touch, the sub delivered a tantalising free-kick that fizzed through the box begging for a touch to put it into the net. It never came.
As the game went on, Balotelli continued to make massive contributions. Another great free-kick was whipped into the box, and a swerving shot from open play beat Handanovic but smacked into the post.
As the clock tipped down he stood over yet another free kick from quite a ways out and got audacious. He fired in a low drive that dipped and spun, but Handanovic managed to get down and claw it past the post.
But more impressive than anything he did with the ball was the way he carried himself. When Felipe Melo hit Balotelli with a hard challenge and then verbally antagonised him, the striker stoically ignored the provocation and went about the game.
This was the Balotelli that Milan—and Italy—need to see. He's unlikely to start the game—last week Mihajovic was quoted by the Telegraph(h/t Football Italia) as saying Balotelli wasn't quite match fit—but look for him to come into the game at a similar juncture as a supersub. If he plays the same way, he could find himself rotating with Bacca and Adriano up front more frequently.

Palermo had to replace their main goalscorer in Dybala, but attacking-midfielder Franco Vazquez has been their most-influential player so far.
According to WhoScored.com, Vazquez has notched a pair of assists, averages three shots per game and averages 1.7 key passes. He's the fulcrum of Palermo's attack and the kind of player Milan have problems dealing with.
Three weeks ago, the Rossoneri were carved up by Empoli's RiccardoSaponara from a similar position on the field. If Vazquez can cause the same kind of havoc, Milan's defenders are in for a rough night.

Bacca was Milan's big-money move this summer, but so far he hasn't yet grabbed a game by the neck and taken it over the way he often did with Sevilla.
He's developing a good bit of chemistry with Adriano, but the end product simply isn't there. If Balotelli continues to rise, he's the one who, on current form, could lose his spot.
Bacca will be attacking a back three led by Moroccan centre-backAdbelhamid El Kaoutari. WhoScored has clocked him at 4.3 tackles and 2.3 interceptions in the team's first three games. He's going to be the point man to contain Bacca.
The Colombian striker needs to find his footing at his new club. Palermo have been stingy so far, but they don't have any world-class players. If Bacca gains the upper hand in this matchup, he could open the floodgates and put his season on a roll.

Palermo 1-2 AC Milan
AC Milan picked up their first win away from home since mid-October, and only their third of the season, by beating Palermo 2-1 at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.
Alessio Cerci gave Filippo Inzaghi's men the lead after 37 minutes, but a Paulo Dybala penalty brought the hosts level in the 72nd minute.
Jeremy Menez restored Milan's lead 10 minutes later, earning them all three points and keeping their hopes alive of qualifying for Europe next season.
Palermo took the game to their opponents with their three-man attack searching for weaknesses in the Rossoneri rearguard.
Robin Quaison found one midway through the first half when he burst through three Milan defenders before sending Dybala towards the goal-line.
The Argentinian's pass across goal was a golden invitation for Vazquez to give the hosts the lead, but he placed his shot wide of the gaping goal.
It was an embarrassing miss which nearly proved costly within seconds as Cerci sent in a cross which Mattia Destro lifted just over the crossbar.
Milan's next chance was taken with Cerci this time on the end of Marco Van Ginkel's cross to score his first goal for the Rossoneri.
Just a few minutes later, Palermo thought they had levelled but the goal was ruled out for offside with Luca Rigoni drifting just beyond the last defender before Edgar Barreto dispatched his effort.
It was Milan's turn to have a goal ruled out for offside early in the second half with Destro denied by a matter of inches, just before Palermo had a penalty appeal waved away after Rigoni went down inside the penalty area.
They got a penalty in the 71st minute when Andrea Belotti tripped over Gabriel Paletta's leg, and Dybala brought the hosts level with his well-placed spot-kick.
The game opened up with both sides keen to take all three points and chances falling at both ends.
Palermo committed too many men forwards, though, and a huge gap opened up for Menez to burst into, and as Stefano Sorrentino came out to meet him, the Frenchman lifted his shot just underneath the crossbar for what would prove to be the winner.
